Forgiveness Overview
Under student loan forgiveness, the remaining outstanding balance of principal and accrued interest on an eligible Federal Direct Loan
will be forgiven for a student who borrowed and is not in default. This borrowers must also make 120 monthly payments on the loan.
Loan forgiveness is possible only under certain repayment plans, after Oct 1, 2007, while employed in certain public service fields.
Student loan discharge refers to the cancellation of a loan, even one in default, due to school closure, false certification, borrower's death, or total and permanent
liability.

Many students ask if student loan forgiveness applies to Federal Parent PLUS loans. The answer is Yes.
This loan includes Parents, Graduate Students,

In most cases the same forgiveness provisions that apply to Stafford loans apply also to PLUS loans.
Discharge Qualification
In order to be eligible to have your remaining loan balances canceled, you must not be in default. On top of that you must have mad 120 payments on the eligible loans beginning
after Oct 1, 2007. Earlier payments will not count.

The Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program is intended to encourage individuals to enter and remain in the teaching profession. The program grants loan forgiveness of up to $17,500 for teachers in certain
specialties and up to $5,000 for other teachers, who teach for five years in certain low-income schools and meet other requirements. This forgiveness benefit is available to Direct Loan and Federal
Family Education Loan (FFEL) program borrowers who did not have an outstanding balance on a Direct Loan or FFEL Program loan on October 1, 1998, or on the date they obtained a Direct Loan or FFEL

After the forgiveness amount is applied to all fees, the remaining forgiveness amount will be applied to all outstanding interest on unsubsidized loans then subsidized loans, then to all outstanding
interest on eligible consolidation loans. Lastly, the remaining forgiveness amount will be applied to unsubsidized loan principal balances, to subsidized principal loan balances and to the outstanding
principal on eligible consolidation loans.
