Veterans, military personnel, and their dependents make up more than one third of America's population. Every year public and private agencies set aside billions of dollars in
Financial Aid for these groups.
Just like with financial aid for other group categories, veterans start their process with a FAFSA Application.
Most of the benefits veterans receive should not be reported as income. Those should be treated as resources in order to increase eligibility.
To be considered a veteran, you must have served on active duty and been discharged under other than dishonorable conditions. If your service was only for training purposes
(National Guard or Reserves, or ROTC), you are not considered a veteran for federal aid.

One of the most important Veteran programs is Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Program (DEA). This program was designed for veteran families.
This program provides up to 45 months of education and training opportunities to
eligible dependents of certain veterans. In order to be eligible, you must be the son, daughter, or spouse of a veteran who died or is permanently and totally disabled as the result of a
service-related disability, or who died while such a disability was in effect, or is MIA or captured in the line of duty by a hostile force, or is forcibly detained or interned in the line of
duty by a foreign government or power.
Sons or daughters must be between the ages of 18 and 26. Spousal benefits end 10 years from the date the VA finds the spouse as eligible or from the date of death of the veteran.

Armed Forces Tuition Assistance (TA) is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Congress has given each service the ability to pay up to 100% for
the tuition expenses of its members.
Each service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application process and restrictions. This money is paid directly to the institution by
the individual services.
Top-Up is a program that allows GI Bill participants' to use the GI Bill to supplement the tuition and fees not covered by tuition assistance. The amount of the benefit can be equal to the
difference between the total cost of a college course and the amount of Tuition Assistance that is paid by the military for the course.
A new education benefit for reserve and guard members who served over 90 days in support of OEF/OIF.
REAP is a Department of Defense/VA education benefit program designed to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation)* as declared by the President or Congress.

education benefits to eligible veterans for: College, Business, Technical or Vocational Courses, Correspondence Courses, Apprenticeship/Job Training, Flight Training.
The Post 9/11 GI Bill provides up to 36 months (4 regular school years) of education benefits to eligible service members and veterans for: College, Business, Technical or Vocational Courses,
Correspondence Courses, Apprenticeship/Job Training, Flight Training.
The Federal Government offers students low interest Federal Student Loans and
Grants to help finance the cost of going to school.
Veterans pursuing their educational goals are usually eligible for "educational assistance for students" in most states. Educational benefits for veterans and their dependents, particularly
the children of deceased and disabled veterans, are also available in some states.
Scholarships can come in the form of direct cash, tuition payments, vouchers and waivers. Military related Scholarships
are offered by The American Legion
