Start looking into financial aid in your sophomore year of high school. Read the Fund Your Future and The Student Guide, published by the California Student Aid Commission and the U.S. Department of
Education. These publications will detail out what you need to do in order to prepare yourself for college from the financial point of view.
If you are a student straight out of high school it is very easy for you to Apply for
Financial Aid. The entire Financial Aid business if you will is mostly geared towards undergraduate students. Federal Government, State Governments,
School, Private Institutions, Banks, and Education Oriented Organization all offer different aid to help you achieve higher education.
Some of the types of Financial Aid offered by the above parties include: Student Loans,
Scholarships, Grants, Federal Work-Study Programs,
Fellowships, and Traineeships.
Planning for Financial Aid is actually very difficult. Everyone is in a different situation with different goals. There are no
one size fit all solutions to this problem and there will never be a perfect solution that will solve all financial aid issues up front.
The first problem students have to solve is to figure out what they want to do in life. As you can see it gets complicated from the get go, but knowing what you want and what your speciality is
gives you advantage over other students. In the financial aid world the advantage will show when the time to write and essay for a Grant
or Scholarship comes.
Knowing yourself, having a hobby, or simply being interested in a specific major will allow you to advertise yourself better for a particular program. Showing heart and passion towards a particular
interest is very important and it's very positive. Sponsors notice this and they know their money will be wasted.
Preparing required documentation that will be required in the future and setting yourself up to be able to deliver that documentation could also be a challenge. There are many different
documents that will be required for college. Some of those documents could be problematic if your parents do not file income tax, or if they are divorced and you do not know their actual income.
If you are a dependent student you must provide income tax documents from the parents/guardians or whoever is claiming you as a dependent. You need to have some form of ID. Driver's license is
very important at this stage in life. For more information what is requried and how to setup yourself correctly for Financial Aid
visit our Still In High School (Before College) page.
Documentation specific issues do not come up for everyone, but they come up and should not be ignored. Run a checklist of what is required for your own situation and make sure to be in a pension
to have those documents when you Apply.
It will be wise to do some research on financial aid and it's offerings. There is no better place to start then this website, or your school financial aid advisor. You may also want to
contact Financial Aid Agencies in your state.
All this places offer many resources on the subject and will be glad to help you achieve your goals for free. In case you know the school you plan on attending it is your best bet to visit
the financial aid office in that school. Search Here For Schools and their contact information.
Building your credit history is very important as we are living in a credit based system. When students have no choice but to pay for school, they pay by borrowing funds and they do not
use their own money, because they do not have it. This simple fact requires students to build good credit history as soon as possible in order to receive Student Loans.

Very often students entering college out of the state they reside in have to pay higher tuition fees. This does not have to be the case. There are at least two ways to fix the problem.
Sometimes neighboring states team up and lower tuition for students from the same team. It is worth wile to check with your neighboring state if such a program is available.
The other solution is to contact Financial Aid Agencies in the target state and ask for residency rules.
Chances are the rules are not super strict and it's easy to become a resident.
One way of doing so is to buy a super cheap house in that state months before applying for federal or state aid.
This is valid especially if the house is cheaper than the extra cost of tuition for out of state students. These days it's not hard to find a house or rent below the extra cost.
Students should calculate everything up front and figure out how much everything costs and become familiar with all the fees and expenses. That way there will be no surprises later.
Once calculated the plan for Financial Aid will become more obvious. Students will even have a chance to get a job
and save some money for college if they plan well in advance.
For college related calculations please visit our Tools and Calculators section.
When we summarize everything we see that Financial Aid exists and college does not have to cost much at all.
There are many program available to future students. We must plan and prepare in advance in order to receive more later on. Building credit history is important as it will
help us in many ways. Visit our Build Perfect Credit History page to get started.
We advise our financial aid candidates to use our tools below and see how much college is going to cost, how to plan or save for college, how to find financial aid, and calculate
