Welcome to our website. Amero.org is the new kid on the block for Financial Aid - Student Loans. This website exists completely by accident and it's my entire fault. Read more and you'll see how much can be achieved using hard work and determination.
Yes, we are meeting here by accident and that’s because I made a bet trying to show off. I told my friends I will get to the top of the search engine index on a very competitive keyword in six months. Some of my friends were laughing and some told me it will take ten years to get there. Later that night while searching for an idea for my website and trying to figure out what topic could I concentrate on, I came across a domain for sale.
This domain was related to Financial Aid. It was very long and very expensive. I approached the owner and we started talking about Student Loans. He tried to sell me his domain and he was convincing me how a domain that has nothing to do with Student Loans will not outperform his domain in the search engine.
Having no website at all, no good domain, and telling everyone how high I will be indexed on Google started o motivate me more and more. I decided to go against the grain. Since I like challenge my approach was not only to deliver on my bet within six months, but also to do it on a domain that has nothing to do with Financial Aid.
At this point I started to become really hyped up about the whole project. I went online and started to see what Financial Aid is all about. The best way to do that was to visit my future competition. At first it seemed super easy.
I contacted some of those top website owners and I asked them if they could partner with me. The idea was they would offer already well positioned domain on the index and I would build a big website. Whoever replied always said something along these lines: either I start making $1 million and up offers, or I should just go home. So I went home.
Browsing and reading information on most of the related websites made me realize something is not right. According to most of my competitors Financial Aid came down to two things only: Student Loans and FAFSA Application.
All those websites I found had the same thing in common: few pages, lots of meaningless content, some applications, lots of ads, everyone talking how college costs go up, very limited view on Financial Aid, but no website offered any money to help students.
There it was. All those weaknesses I found opened up a window of opportunity for me and gave me a shot at winning the bet.
I started working very late last year (2009) and I don’t even remember where Christmas went. Lots of work and lot’s of determination.
At midpoint I realized time is running out and I won’t be able to deliver what I designed for the site in the first place. I cut the project into three parts and decided to deliver the first part and give it a shot.
Now that we are live with the first iteration of this application I completely do not care if I lose my bet. Along the way I fall in love with this site and I really started to like Financial Aid – and helping others achieve their educational goals. I never assumed I will be as proud of this as I am.
This site is not perfect, not even as good as I wanted to be for the first release, but I had to lunch in order to keep it alive and make myself motivated. The last three months spent in the realm of Financial Aid were also great at coming up with ideas for the future. Some of those ideas would help students achieve their goals much easier. Those solutions will get implemented in the upcoming versions of the site.
Our approach will always be very simple: students want money and they do not want to pay it back. This money exists and we will bring it to you in the future.
Meanwhile check out our site and visit our sponsors. We hope you enjoy it and provide us with some feedback.
Thank you for visiting and remember whenever you're doing something put your heart to it. It will work.
